Just Football – Socceroos preview

An extensive preview of the Socceroos for the Asian Cup, detailing their history, manager, key players and tactical approach

This is Australia’s third Asian Cup after switching from the Oceania Confederation in 2006. 2007, their Asian debut, was a dismal failure – they scraped through the group, and then were eliminated in the quarter-final by Japan after going into the tournament with expectations of winning the trophy. 2011 was far more promising, with Holger Osieck taking the side to the final where they again lost to Japan, this time falling to a 120th minute equaliser.

As one of the continent’s premier nations, and this time as hosts, hopes are high for the Socceroos to go one step further in 2015…but the reality offers a sobering raincheck.
